Chapter Seven

The next day Rachel was in the kitchen preparing lunch for the children.

A knock sounded at the back door.

She opened the back door and Billy Granger stood there grinning at her. His teeth were brown and he was missing his upper front two teeth. His evil smile sent chills down her spine.

Rachel stiffened her spine while her stomach tied itself in knots. She hadn’t found the money. The children were in the boys’ room, safe. She tried to close the door but he pushed it open.

His smile was gone now replaced by a snarl. “Now Rachel is that any way to treat the man who has yer youngun’s lives in his hands?”

“What do you want?”

“What do ya think, Rachel? I want my money and I want it now.”

“I didn’t give you leave to call me by my first name. I’m Mrs. Egan to you and I haven’t found the money yet. I have to empty the trunks slowly so I don’t raise Joshua’s suspicions. After all, you didn’t want me to tell Joshua.”

Billy narrowed his eyes. “You got ’til tomorra. If ya don’t got it, one of those children will disappear until you do.” He lifted a brow. “And if ya don’t find it by the next day, I might just send ya a finger to let ya know I’m serious.”

Her heart pounded in her chest. “I’ll find it. Just give me more time. Please.”

“Ya got my answer. I’ll be back tomorra and ya better got that money.” He turned and left.

As soon as he was gone, Rachel’s eyes filled with tears, and her body shook all over. She had to tell Joshua, regardless of what he thought of Frank or of her. She couldn’t risk the children’s safety, but first she had to find that money. She ran to the bedroom and threw all the linens from the trunk onto the bed. I should have just thrown the things from the trunk on the bed yesterday and let Joshua think what he would. This situation is entirely my fault. Taking a deep breath, she ran her hands around the inside of the trunk. On the bottom she found a slit and a large envelope inside. She opened it and saw money. Lots of money. She placed the envelope in the bottom of the drawer she kept her under-things in. Then she took deep breaths and calmed herself. After she was ready, she went to the boy’s room and found Maggie with Gertie and the boys.

“Maggie, I have to go talk to your father for a few minutes. Would you watch your brothers and sister for me?”

She rolled her eyes. “Sure. That’s what I always do.”

“I know and I appreciate you very much. You’re a good girl and your father is very proud of you. Thank you for this.”

Maggie narrowed her eyes. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

Rachel was taken aback. “I always try to be nice to you. Why would you think I’m not?”

“You didn’t put curtains in my room or give me new sheets either.
